"The Three Monkeys"
(Submitted by Darlene Psota)

I know I have taught on this before, but when Deb asked me to do a teaching on accountability, God brought this to mind immediately.  It has to do with three monkeys - and me - and you.

My grandmother had a figurine that sat on a shelf hanging on her wall.  It was three monkeys - one was covering his ears, one was covering his eyes, and the other was covering his mouth.  It was to represent the old saying, "Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil."  As a child, I was fascinated by it and would repeatedly ask my grandma to tell me about it.  However, through the years I forgot about the monkeys, until God reminded me of it to use as an illustration in a teaching I was doing.  And as always, it turned into a case of where the teacher probably learned more than the students!

God used that little statue to let me know there were times when I was listening to things that were not of Him, that I was watching things that were not godly, and that I was speaking things that were not bringing Him the glory.  Ouch!  That one left a mark!

So, you're asking, what has this got to do with accountability?  Well, let's bring accountability down to the "nitty-gritty".  In simple terms, accountability means nothing more than "Am I doing the things that Christ requires of me?"

Therefore, if I am being honest with myself and God, am I doing the things that Christ desires me to do?  Am I listening and watching and speaking only what God is telling me to?  Am I being obedient and Christ-like in my everyday life - or am I good at "looking good" when others are around, but being a monkey when I'm alone?  Do I seek God's direction every morning - or do I spend the day doing things my way?

I doubt anyone of us wants to be compared to a monkey (So there, Charles Darwin!).  My prayer is to be a woman after God's own heart - seeking Him, obeying Him, giving Him the glory.  I challenge you to complete the study exercise below.  Write the verses in a journal.  Keep them close so when you are spending your quiet time with your Father, you will ask Him what it is He wants you to do.

Look up the following Scriptures.  Ask God to show you how they relate to accountability.  Record what God tells you.

If you find that you are struggling in any area, ask God to give you wisdom and strength to overcome.  And, I will be so bold as to challenge you to go one step further.  Find a fellow believer (same sex, please).  Share your struggle, ask them to pray for, and with, you.  Then (are you honest enough?) - make yourself accountable to that person!  Give them permission to ask you how you are doing!

Hard?  Scary?  Trust God - being accountable is far better than being a monkey!
